Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Indian women, and most women in Marathwada are diagnosed only after a lump has been present for months. Found early, it is one of the most curable cancers.

Warning signs

  • A painless lump in the breast or armpit
  • Change in size or shape of the breast, dimpling or "orange-peel" skin
  • Nipple pulled inwards, or blood-stained discharge
  • A wound on the breast that does not heal

How it is diagnosed

Clinical examination, mammography and/or ultrasound, and a core needle biopsy. The biopsy report (with ER, PR, HER2 and Ki-67) decides the treatment, so we always ask for the full report. A PET-CT or CT scan is done when needed for staging.

Treatment at Shree We Care Clinic

Treatment is planned together with the surgeon and radiation oncologist: - Chemotherapy – before surgery (neoadjuvant) to shrink the tumour, or after surgery (adjuvant) - Hormone therapy (tamoxifen, letrozole and others) for hormone-positive cancers - Targeted therapy such as trastuzumab for HER2-positive cancers - Immunotherapy for selected triple-negative cancers - Day-care chemotherapy – you go home the same day

Who should get checked

Any woman with a breast lump, any age. Women with a mother, sister or daughter with breast or ovarian cancer should ask about genetic testing.
