Cancer of Unknown Primary

In about 2–5% of cancers, the disease is found where it has spread (for example in the liver, lymph glands or bones), but the organ where it started cannot be found. This is called cancer of unknown primary (CUP).

How we evaluate it

  • Careful review of the biopsy with immunohistochemistry markers that point to the likely origin
  • PET-CT scan, endoscopy or mammography where indicated
  • Tumour markers and, when useful, molecular profiling
  • Discussion in our tumour board

Treatment

Treatment is chosen according to the most likely origin and the biopsy markers. Some patients belong to "favourable" groups that respond very well to specific treatment. Even when cure is not possible, treatment can control the disease and relieve symptoms.
