Gynaecological Cancers

Cancers of the cervix (mouth of the uterus), ovary and uterus are common in Indian women. Cervical cancer is largely preventable.

Warning signs

  • Bleeding after menopause, after intercourse or between periods
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Bloating, early fullness, increasing abdominal size (ovarian cancer)
  • Pelvic pain

Diagnosis

Pelvic examination, Pap smear, ultrasound, CT/MRI, CA-125 and biopsy.

Treatment

  • Chemotherapy before or after surgery (especially for ovarian cancer)
  • Chemoradiation for cervical cancer
  • PARP inhibitors (targeted tablets) for BRCA-mutated or selected ovarian cancers
  • Immunotherapy for selected cervical and uterine cancers

Prevention

HPV vaccination for girls (9–14 years is ideal) and regular Pap/HPV screening after 30 prevent most cervical cancers. Women with ovarian cancer should ask about BRCA testing.
