Blood Clots & Clotting Disorders (Thrombosis)

Blood clots can form in the veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis, DVT), travel to the lungs (pulmonary embolism), or form in unusual places such as the brain or abdominal veins.

Warning signs – seek urgent care

  • Sudden swelling, pain and warmth of one leg
  • Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood
  • Severe headache with fits or weakness (brain vein clot)

Who is at risk

Recent surgery or long bed rest, cancer and chemotherapy, pregnancy and the period after delivery, hormonal pills, long travel, and inherited thrombophilia (Protein C/S, antithrombin deficiency, Factor V Leiden) or antiphospholipid syndrome.

What we do

  • Choice and monitoring of blood thinners (heparin, warfarin with INR checks, newer oral anticoagulants)
  • Deciding how long to continue treatment
  • Thrombophilia testing in young patients, unusual-site clots or recurrent clots
  • Safe management of blood thinners in pregnancy, cancer and before procedures
