Bone and Soft Tissue Cancers (Sarcoma)

Sarcomas are rare cancers of bone (such as osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma) and of muscle, fat and connective tissue (soft tissue sarcoma). They are commoner in children and young adults than most cancers.

Warning signs

  • A lump that is growing, deep, or larger than 5 cm
  • Bone pain that is worse at night, or swelling near a joint
  • A fracture after a minor injury

Diagnosis

X-ray, MRI, and a core biopsy planned with the surgeon – a wrongly placed biopsy can make limb-saving surgery difficult, so get a specialist opinion before the biopsy.

Treatment

  • Chemotherapy before and after surgery for osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma
  • Limb-saving surgery and radiation at partner centres
  • Targeted therapy for selected sarcomas such as GIST
  • Every sarcoma case is discussed in our rare tumour board
