Desmoid Tumour (Aggressive Fibromatosis)

Desmoid tumours (aggressive fibromatosis) are rare growths of fibrous tissue. They do not spread to other organs, but they can grow into nearby muscles and organs. They are commoner in young women, sometimes after pregnancy or surgery.

Symptoms

A firm, slowly growing lump in the abdominal wall, limb, shoulder or inside the abdomen; pain or restricted movement.

Management has changed

Surgery is no longer the automatic first step – these tumours often come back after surgery, and some stop growing or shrink on their own. Current treatment includes: - Active surveillance with periodic MRI - Medical therapy: anti-inflammatory drugs, hormonal therapy, low-dose chemotherapy or targeted tablets - Surgery or radiation for selected cases

Every case is reviewed in our rare tumour board.
